Destination Ukraine. Trip to Odessa

Odessa city is being the administrative center of Odessa region with its over 1 million inhabitants population (Odessa is the only city in Ukraine which has so many nations (200) living in it) and satellite cities of Illyichevsk and Yuzhny is an important industrial and trading complex.

The city is situated on the Black Sea north-western seashore (The Black Sea and foreign investments make Odessa the 2nd largest resort in Ukraine) on the trading routes from the Central and Northern Europe to the Close East and Asia crossing. Developed highways network, city location near the Danube, the Dniester, the Southern Bug, the Dnieper rivers, as well as large seaport of Odessa, with Odessa international airport and railway create the unique favorable conditions for loads accepting, processing, saving, and transporting and the powerful passenger flows processing.

Catherine the Great founded Odessa in 1794. In 1764 the Empress formed the territories newly acquired in the southwest other empire into a province called New Russia. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-91, Don Josef de Ribas (Spanish) stormed the fortress of Yeny-Dunai at Khadzhibei. De Ribas and his close collaborator, a Dutch engineer named Franz de Volan, recommended Khadzhibei as the site for the region’s principal port. Its harbor was deep and nearly ice-free. Breakwaters, on the model of those found at Naples and Livorno could be cheaply constructed and would render the harbor safe even for large fleets. The Governor General of New Russia, Prince Platon Zubov one of Catherine’s favorites gave decisive support to the latter proposal. In 1794, Catherine gave it her approval. She immediately sent money to de Ribas and de Volan to build a harbor. This new settlement was given the name Odessa.

The unique position of Odessa as a vital trade link between the West and the East, and the growth in importance of Russia’s external trade through the Black Sea in the 19th century made way for the establishment of a big trade port center for the development of Odessa into an advanced European city. By its hundredth anniversary (1894), Odessa occupied the 4th place in the Russian Empire in size and economic power – after St. Petersburg, Moscow and Warsaw.

Since Odessa has got a lot of educational establishments, theaters, museums, libraries and other cultural and educational profile establishments, the city is known all over the world and is considered to be both the economical and the cultural center of Ukraine.

Many world-famous musicians, writers and artists lived and worked here, not every city has so rich a cultural biography as Odessa does. The mixture of rich architecture, warm hospitality, and beautiful nature is the secret of Odessa’s popularity, and success as one of the leading Ukrainian resorts.

Moderately continental and comparatively dry climate with a short mild winter and long hot summer (more than 290 sunny days in the year) make Odessa the largest resort on the coast of The Black Sea.

Winter is short and mild with an average temperature of around freezing point. Falling snow and temperatures below minus 5 Celsius are rare. Summer is long and hot with an average temperature of 25 Celsius. Temperatures above 35 Celsius are quite often.

A mild climate, plenty of beaches, and the Black Sea attract thousands of tourists to Odessa throughout the year, earning it the title of “Southern Palmyra”. Odessa is the southern gate of the state and the most important Ukrainian seaport. Odessa is also well known for its rich history, beautiful buildings, and inexhaustible humor.

1988 Odessa Permian vs Midland Lee Friday Night Lights

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

For those who have read the book Friday Night Lights or seen the movie, this is the actual game against Midland Lee. It also includes the introduction of the offense for those interested in seeing what the Permian Panthers looked like. The book is not entirely true about many things, and the movie further distorts things. This game DID force a 3-way tie in district which required a coin toss to determine playoff contenders. It took me over 6 years of searching to find a complete copy of this game, but someone in Odessa somehow found it.

Odessa, Ukraine. Traveler’s Attractions

Would tourist attractions, Odessa lifestyle model and entertainment in Odessa really matter for a single backpacker? Since the very moment you take a look at Odessa Map, it would give you a single and definite answer. Odessa is the city known for its humor, the most beautiful women in Ukraine, rich story of the whole nation. Yes, right, not just the city, but a separate nation. As long as Moscow and Riga is supposed to be the separate states with separate governing system, Odessa is one of the kind to be included as the #3 in this hero-cities chain.

So, the first question from a “touristo” is: Where to stay?

The answer is… Try Odessa accommodations (hotels, apartments, hostels)

A few 4* hotels to name are: “Palladium” (Italians blvd., Kanatna str.), “Odessa”, former “Kempinski” hotel (Sea Port, near Potyomkin stairs) and popular among tourists “Arcadia Plaza” (one of the youngest hotels), that is close to the sea coast, night clubs and just beautiful and lively Fountain area in Odessa.

Rating: good quality, each room accommodate up to 3 guests, price – European standard.

Odessa apartments (privately owned, compact and convenient, furnished, equipped). By now Odessa apartments has got the most accommodations rating from tourists due to inexpensive prices, yet high standards and privacy.

Rating: high quality, high rating, accommodate up to 5 guests, prices vary dependable upon the accommodation level. Apartments have chambermaid service (weekly or, upon request), laundry and extra linen.

Odessa, the multinational city

Odessa counts over 1 million inhabitants. In general, the city is multinational and counts Bulgarians, Moldovans, Russians, Ukrainians (the natives).

Odessa changes, Odessa grows and modernizes, Odessa blossoms and recreates as a “new generation” resort. Large monumental history (as many monuments not a single one of the European cities would possess), yet it would sound quite amazing when you see quite a few casinos around, 4*- 5* restaurants that would compete in quality and price volume in the entire world. So, who said Odessa is a Soviet place?

Odessa – a good place to gamble and eat? Now, further more…

Odessa restaurants (to name only a few) are Steak house (meat and wine) – #18 Deribaska str; Buffalo ’99 (European) – #7 Richelievska ( corner Deribaska); Estrelita (Italian) – #1 Yekaterinska str.; Sushi time (Japanese) – Lustdorfska road (Tavria); Hong Kong (Chinese) – Gavanna str. corner Deribaska; Mexico (Mexican) – Glushko str; Katran (Seafood) – #13 Mayachniy per; Koumanets – Lanzheronovskaya str. (corner Gavanna). Average level of receiving guests – homely manner, good food quality, friendly staff, credit cards accepted.

A few words to say about Odessa sights and night life not to forget what most of the backpackers come for: Shevchenko Park (cultural area); Sea coast; Potyomkin Staircase (mostly referred as the battle spot), Primorskiy Boulvd, Deribaska str; 411 Memorial Battery (dedicated to WW2, The Great War of 1941-1945); Dolphin park – Lanzheron beach; Arcadia beach & Night clubs; Preobrazhenskiy Monastery; Literature, Archaeological, Western & Eastern Arts Museums; Opera House, Russian Drama Theatre, Ukrainian Drama Theatre, Philarmony. And all of the places still remain the same as they were in Soviet age which every mature Odessan recalls with a warm smile on their face.

Let’s talk about night clubs. Yo; Fidel; Palladium; Hali Gali. Average age attended: 18-45, face control enabled. Establishments are mostly friendly and hospitable. A good place to dance, POP and electron music lovers.

Bowl/billiards places: Odin; Mexico; Profy – 24/7 service. Playing tables reservation, bars, saunas, exotic massage starting from Russian ending up Thai and Chinese techniques.

And, at last, beaches. We know a few now and let’s sum up our nice tour with the most sceneric areas of the coastal area. Arcadia; Delphin; Gold Coast; Karolino Bugaz – resort area, entertainment base, hotels, summer night clubs, pools. Shrewd Odessans will make you feel comfortable as long as you have the budget set up.

Destination guides also recommend the following sights Sofievka, Uman park; Ascania Nova, wild animal reserves; Vilkovo, Odessa Venice (excursion includes boat walks, meat and champagne lunch and some rest times to spend with the locals).

Bottom line for Odessa attractions. Odessa in Ukraine has been always noticed about in various, still fun and amazing in Memoirs by Isaak Babel, Vorontsov (whose stone monument remains standing high above the Odessa buildings), who’s put a lot effort into architecture and building of the hero city of Odessa.

Did anyone else notice the resemblance to the Odessa Stairs sequence in Iron Man 2?

Question by Chase M: Did anyone else notice the resemblance to the Odessa Stairs in Iron Man 2?
In Iron Man 2, did anybody notice, when the drones first started attacking at StarkExpo, a resemblance to the “Odessa Stairs” from Battleship Potempkin? Or am I just being too much of a movie nerd?

I mean, I hardly guess Favreau would try to directly correlate the two films, but still. I couldn’t help but notice it.
